With the intended implementation date of AN-ACC set for October 2022 – we’re getting asked a lot about what will be required for a successful AN-ACC Assessment visit. There’s definitely some things that the Government haven’t yet released, but based on what we currently know – the following lays out how to nail a visit!
While the Shadow Assessment period currently underway does not affect your current ACFI funding, it’s a good dress rehearsal to try out the below strategies.
The AN-ACC Assessment visit is based on:
a. Resident interviews
b. Observation (including of care activities)
c. Clinical documentation
DOCUMENTATION
What’s important? Proactive systems for clinical assessment and care plans, including Holistic needs-based clinical assessments completed by a clinician who is an expert in this area and is able to clearly and succinctly paint the correct and complete picture for care delivery.
The Assessors will be collating the required information from your systems in order to fulfill the requirements for their assessments. See the AN-ACC Reference Manual and Assessment Tool here.
They only have approximately 1 hour to complete their assessment, so, the easier you make it for them to gather the full clinical picture of each Resident, the more successful you’ll be.
INTERVIEWS
The Assessors will meet & interview your team and the Residents. It is important to make sure that your team are comfortable and understand the process and why they may be interviewed. They also must understand the importance of following the care plan! Carer Education: just like at validation, it’s critical they understand the why behind the care being delivered.
When a Resident is interviewed, they should always, always be accompanied by a team member. If the Resident becomes distressed in any way, the interview should and can be aborted immediately. It is critical that your assessments and care plans are based on the Resident’s clinical needs and their own personal goals. OBSERVATIONS
The Assessors will meet and observe the Resident, and may ask them to perform simple task assessments or observe care activities such as meal time. Always have a team member accompany the Resident during these activities. If the Resident becomes distressed in any way, the observations can and should be cancelled immediately. It is important to support your Resident; you are providing their care and can demonstrate how their care plan reflects their care needs.
